Inuits - customs and traditions (OAS) China - do play "Five/Seven Chinese Brothers" (KNCS) China - do ribbon dancing (KNCS) Inuits - don't really cover Inuits today since the values in their ancient culture are what the teacher focuses on (KNCS) [In the original language "Inuit" is plural meaning "the people" or "human beings". The singular is "inuk". -- despite what it says on dictionary.com.] Africa - great time to bring in songs and instruments, as well as guest speakers (KNCS) Unit on Pilgrims (about 1 month) while studying the Lord's Prayer. (KNCS) Unit on Christmas traditions in Scandinavia (KNCS) We would like to add a unit called, "The Country we live in", which would encorporate getting to know a map of the U.S. (1st Grade, BACS Unit 3: Inuit-NORTHERN LIGHTS, OPTIONAL-WE WOULD LIKE IT NOT OPTIONAL (1st Grade, BACS) UNit 5: Africa-NEW CHURCH SOCIETIES IN AFRICA (1st Grade, BACS) In general-Patriotism (1st Grade, BACS) What map skills do you teach? Don't do much -some with Native Americans, Nomads(Abraham's journey etc), community and China(rivers, capital) (OAS)
Extra notes: it seemed that the general consensus was that (at least in our representative group) none of us are doing the Netherlands. So maybe that should be taken out all together (also, we do it every 4 years in our Christmas Around the World (elective) (OAS)
Ancient Church - I find that this is more of my religion/worship than it is a separate unit - therefore I don't do much more than the Silver Age, worship and a little bit with symbols. (OAS)
The students use a globe and flat map to locate where they are/the U.S. is in relation to where the people and places they're studying are located. (KNCS 1st gr. yr.)
To study China, the students draw a map and locate mountains, rivers, and the China Wall. (KNCS 1st gr. yr.)
Students learn the 4 directions (N, S, E, W) while learning the #4 in math (teacher relates to 4 seasons, winds, etc.) (KNCS 1st gr. yr.)
Students learn basic sections of Africa when studying it (North Africa, South Africa). (KNCS 1st gr. yr.)
When studying the Netherlands, the students learn about dikes, sea level, and land reclaimed from the sea. (KNCS 1st gr. yr.)
Students create a map of Egypt and locate the Nile and its delta. (KNCS 2nd gr. yr.)
Students create a map of the Holy Land, locating the Jordan River and the Sea of Galilee. (KNCS 2nd gr. yr.)
Using a map of the U.S. with Native American regions on it, students put different shelter and food types in the correct regions. (KNCS 2nd gr. yr.) Directions: North, South, West, East; Following directions, labeling/coloring maps: Egypt, Deserts, Native American Groups (2nd Grade, BACS)

Geography/social studies is very integrated with language arts. (KNCS)
Focus on showing the Lord's Providence - how He provides for different peoples, the good values of different cultures, and how we are dependent on the Him. (KNCS)
Teacher puts Netherlands unit in the 2nd grade year instead of 1st (KNCS)
Teacher includes all Kindergarten units in her curriculum (Kindergarten super informal). (KNCS)
Teacher covers the optional astronomy portion of Native Americans under Nomads. (KNCS) There a lot of optional choices in the first grade curriculum. (1st Grade, BACS) Do other grades have a Worship unit in the Social Studies Currciculum? We have: The Child's Family Life, Heaven, and Most Ancient Church-these are all covered in Worship. (1st Grade, BACS)
Teacher covers special situations (in The Child's Family Life unit) as needed during worship time. (KNCS) Ancient Church has a very different kind of presentation because it is done during Worship, and is not "academic". (2nd Grade, BACS)
